September 14, 2026 -- EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI The first chilly night for a game on Mehney did nothing to cool off the sticks of Senior co-Captain Peyton Astrauskas (’27) or Toccoa Lepley (’29). Both had their way in the circle tallying a hat trick of three goals apiece as the EGR Girls’ Field Hockey team ran away with a 6-0 win at home. In what turned into a spirited game with plenty of pushing and physical play, Astrauskas and Lepley helped the team keep cooler heads by tallying a goal in the first by Astrauskas of of a scramble in front of the goal. With plenty of teammates in the offensive circle, the pass from Tess Bombery (’28) allowed Astrauskas to control the ball at the feet of the Hudsonville goalie and slotted a shot between her pads and smack the back boards. Early in the 2nd Quarter, EGR mounted a sustained attack that forced eight offensive penalty corners against the Eagles. Lepley got herself on the board by gathering a loose ball and lifting a shot into the far left corner past an unsuspecting goalie. She continued to stack the pressure on another corner when the ball was insereted by Tess Bombery to Astrauskas who slid a pass to Lepley to bang the backboards for a second time. Leading 3-0 at the half served as motivation to continue to pressure the overwhelmed opposition. Lepley restarted the play after a foul on Hudsonville and slotted a picture perfect pass to Astrauskas who gathered and powered home a drive that whizzed into the net past the goalkeeper. Senior co-Captain Avery Albers (’27) gathered a loose ball in the backfield, dribbled 10 yards to open space when she found Astrauskas streaking ahead of the pack. She gathered in the pin point pass and outraced 3 defenders, went onto her backhand and sliced a reverse tomahawk into the top of the cage. Lepley finished off the the scoring with a dynamic run, galloping across 30 yards, finding open space and slapping home a dynamic shot into the lower left corner, evading the kick by the Hudsonville netminder. Contributions came from up and down the roster. Staunch defense from Seniors Carly Conway (’27) and Kaylee Stover (’27) kept the Eagles from mounting any substantive attack. Aside from two corners, one in the 1st Quarter and one in the 4th Quarter, the Eagles rarely penetrated the EGR defensive quarter of the field. Evie Paul (’28) found herself filling multiple positions at different times and successfully slowing the Hudsonville midfield and attackers and controlling that side of the field. The team welcomed Mr. Harold as teacher of the Match as his daughter Emma (’35) joined him on the bench with the players. The next game is on Thursday at home against Dexter who was a semifinalist last year and state runner-up two years ago. Who will be the Teacher of the match?
