September 29, 2026 EAST GRAND RAPIDS, MI Under the tutelage of Coach Ed Volovlek, the East Grand Rapids Middle School Field Hockey porgram has continued to grow. The complete team of 16 8th graders, 10 7th graders and 8 6th graders, the program has as many players (34) as the High School Field Hockey Program. As a Homecoming celebration, the HS Porgram hosted the Annual Blue/Gold game between the two teams of the MS Program. There was plenty of involvement from the high schoolers to make sure that this was treated with the same gravitas as the high school games. From the player introductions to refereesand stands full of supporters, the middle schoolers worked hard for the full 40 minutes! With Senior co-Captain Avery Albers ('27) and Camilla Volovlek ('28) leading the Gold team and Senior co-Captain Peyton Astrauskas ('27) teaming up with Toccoa Lepley ('29) to direct the Blue team, there was a constant back and forth with plenty of opportunities to take a lead. With one last offensive penalty corner at the end of regulation, Gold made an excellent effort to try to score and Blue put up a staunch defense to prevent that. Based on the efforts of all, the game fittingly ended with the teams still tied at 0-0. Thanks to many of the Varsity players- Tess Bombery ('28) and Evie Paul ('28) for reffing the match; Lucy Price ('29), Katie Hannah ('29) and Izzy Hunt ('29) for manning the announcing; and thank you to the Field Hockey Parents Boosters for opening up the concession hut for some delicious treats.
