Aug. 25-- EGR Lady Pioneers Butt Heads with Rockford Rams in Field Hockey Clash Rockford, MI-- A clash of West Side titans picked up right where last year left off. After playing to a 2-2 tie at the end of last season, the Lady Pioneers traveled to Rockford to continue to battle for top billing in the OK Conference. Fans will have to wait until the return match on Sept. 9 for any more clarity. The game was a well fought battle between two teams who recognize the skill of the opposition. Rockford defensive player Avery Maag scored on two well placed drives off of set pieces on offensive penalty corners in the first and fourth quarters. Her goals were initially book ends to a tally by Avery Albers ('27), her second of the year. Her deft eye -hand coordination handled a wicked shot released by Peyton Astrauskas ('27) and put the biscuit in the basket with a redirection into the top corner of the cage before the Lady Rams keeper could get over to block it. The Lady Pioneers struggled to gain solid momentum in the second half, but after Maag scored her second goal at the beginning of the fourth quarter, the girls from EGR set their sights on finding an equalizer. It came from the stick of Astrauskas, who slotted home a solid rip from the top of the circle off of another offensive penalty corner. Toccoa Lepley ('29) continued to play at a high level as a Freshman, helping the Lady Pioneers find stability in the midfield after graduating four players from last year's team. Isla Westra ('26) continues to lead a defense settling into a rhythm that will prove difficult for opponents to penetrate as the year continues. These two teams will meet each other again on Sept. 9th on the EGR home turf at Mehney Field at 7 PM. Come watch great hockey and a spirited rivalry.
